NEWS ROUNDUP — Agnico begins Zone 6 work

A $15.1-million development program is under way at Zone 6 of the LaRonde mine, west of Val d’Or, Que.

Agnico-Eagle Mines (TSE) expects the high-grade zone to be in production by mid-1995.

Exploration drilling continues at Zone 20, which is polymetallic and east of the main shaft. Soon, work will begin to deepen the main production shaft to 5,000 ft. and extend two development drifts east into Zone 20. The work is estimated to cost $13.4 million.

LaRonde yielded a record 40,407 oz. gold in the second quarter. For the 6-month period ended June 30, production totaled 76,279 oz.

The grade ore mined in the first half — 0.26 oz. gold per ton on average — exceeded expectations. Unit operating costs decreased during the period, averaging US$201 per oz.
