The Australian government has banned development of the Coronation Hill gold project in northern Australia on the basis that it is sacred ground to the traditional aboriginal owners.
Work on the project, owned 45% each by Newcrest Mining and Plutonic Resources and 10% by North Broken Hill, was halted in 1989 while an 800-page report was prepared. The joint venture has spent more than A$15 million on the project, including a feasibility study, and has established a reserve that amounts to one million ounces of gold along with significant platinum and palladium values.
The project area will be incorporated into the Kakadu conservation zone, an area about twice the size of Switzerland.
