Newmont wins award in Indonesia

PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), a joint venture between Colorado-based Newmont Mining and Japan’s Sumitomo, has received the 2002 National Golden Safety Award from the Department of Energy & Mineral Resources in Indonesia.

The award, which PTNNT won for having the fewest accidents and zero fatalities, was presented by Purnomo Yusgiantoro, the country’s minister of energy and mineral resources. It was accepted by Phil Brumit, general manager of PTNNT’s Batu Hijau mine.

The award followed an appraisal process by the government, which included a site verification audit of NNT’s safety management systems, programs and implementation. Twenty-three companies were evaluated.

The winners are grouped into three categories: gold, silver and bronze. PTNNT was the only company to receive gold status.

PTNNT operates a large copper-gold mine in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The mine has a workforce of 4,300 employees, of which 60% are locals.

Newmont has a 56.25% interest in PTNNT; Sumitomo, 43.75%.
