The fabled Carlin trend in Nevada, which hosts the largest gold reserves outside of South Africa, just keeps getting better. Drilling by Newmont Gold on the Post deposit has intersected 520 ft grading 0.44 oz gold per ton. “This is the highest average grade encountered over so great an interval on Newmont Gold property since the discovery of the original Carlin deposit over 20 years ago,” Dr John R. Parry, senior vice-president of Newmont Mining, said. Newmont Mining is the controlling shareholder of Newmont Gold.
The hole was one of seven drilled to a depth of 2,000 ft below the Post oxide orebody. All encountered gold mineralization. Exploration successes at Carlin will enable Newmont to produce 930,000 oz of gold this year — enough to make the company North America’s largest gold producer.
American Barrick Resources, which plans to mine its portion of the Post deposit’s near-surface oxide ore from a large open pit shared with Newmont, created a sensation last year. A Barrick deep drill hole intersected the Post sulphide deposit grading 0.3 oz gold per ton across 620 ft.
