Vancouver — Prompted by the results from an 11-hole drill program targeting the Guazaucua and Sapucai gold prospects, Newmont Mining (NEM-N) has decided to stop exploring in Paraguay.
The program is located just southeast of Asuncion, the capital city. Four targets were situated in the Sapucai alkaline igneous complex, where previous drilling by Yamana Resources (YRI-T) returned 15 metres grading 2.48 grams gold per tonne from a fluorite-bearing breccia body.
Having completed geophysical, geochemical and geological surveys, Newmont drill-tested for a much larger intrusive complex buried under lavas and overburden.
Seven km away, two of the drill targets tested the largely covered Guazaucua complex, which showed similar mineralizing traits.
The most recent round of drilling found only anomalous amounts of gold at depth.
Yamana plans to evaluate all of the data in an effort to identify new gold targets.
