Underground development work has begun at Newhawk Gold Mines Sulphurets project north of Stewart, B.C. Freight and equipment have been transported to the site for a $5 million 2-phase program, the first part of which will cost $1.5 million.
Another 200 ft of drifting is planned plus some raising to more accurately define West zone reserves. Diamond drilling will be done on 10-m spacing to upgrade and increase reserves in the zone, says Newhawk. At the close of the 1986 season, the drift face was sampled across 10 ft with assays returned grading 0.978 oz gold and 22.67 oz silver. Drifting has resumed at this location in advance of an 8,400-ft underground drilling program.
Trenching and drilling will be done on the Gossan Hill zone which has only been tested for 165 ft along strike. The phase-one program should be completed by the end of May and phase two by year- end. Newhawk has a 30% interest in the project, Lacana Mining 30%, and Granduc Mines 40%. The program is being funded by them on the basis of their respective interests.
