A report and map providing comprehensive coverage of the nature and distribution of recently formed metallic mineral deposits on the deep seabed have been released by the Geological Survey of Canada.
The two publications feature the distribution of manganese nodules, metalliferous sediments and mineral deposits related to hydrothermal systems along global tectonic features, say the report’s authors, G. A. Gross and C. R. McLeod.
It’s claimed the work represents a first major step in creating a data base for comparing modern mineral forming processes observed in more than 150 hydrothermal fields, with those that formed ancient mineral deposits containing the world’s major resources of iron, manganese, copper, zinc and gold.
