New Ontario government regulations will require mining companies operating in the province to reduce emissions of five toxic heavy metals and cyanide by an average of 40% by 1996.
Mines and metal refineries will have to comply with the regulations which affect emissions of copper, lead, nickel, zinc, arsenic and cyanide. The reductions are based on 1990-91 levels. Discharge levels of suspended solids must be cut by 23%.
Also, mine effluent will have to meet the province’s standard water toxicity tests.
Mining is one of nine Ontario industries being asked to meet new water pollution targets under the Municipal-Industrial Strategy for Abatement.
