New mineral agreement for Quebec

A newly negotiated Canada-Quebec Agreement on Mineral Development will pump $100 million into Quebec’s mining industry during the next five years. Ottawa and Quebec will each put up half of that total.

Ottawa and Quebec initially signed a mineral development agreement in 1985; the province’s mining industry has benefited to the tune of some $110 million since then. The latest agreement will run until 1998.

The federal government spends more money helping Quebec’s mining industry than any other province’s. Its $50-million contribution to Quebec is $10 million more than the total assistance given to the four western provinces combined.

Ontario is receiving about $30 million from the feder-

al government and British Columbia, $10 million.

The $100 million will be used to subsidize four different programs in Quebec. More than $44 million will go into exploration, $33 million will be used for project development, $21 million is slated for research and $2 million will be spent on administration of other programs.
