New gravel road to access Canamax and Magino mines

Construction of a 14-km all- weather commuter road, linking two new mine sites in the Goudreau-Lochalsh area near Wawa, Ont., is scheduled to begin later this year.

While construction rests on the results of a planning study, the new access road is expected to coincide with production start-up at Canamax Resouces’ Kremzar gold mine.

The $1.5-million project will be funded by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines through a special allocation for Northern Ontario transportation.

“The road will be of great benefit to the mines and to those employees in the Wawa-Dubreuilville area who commute to the mine sites on a daily basis,” s aid parliamentary assistant David Ramsay.

“It is one of the measures we are undertaking to help develop the area’s significant mineral potential.”

In addition to the Kremzar mine, McNellen Resources and Muscocho Explorations are also close to a production decision at the Magino gold property near Wawa where reserves stand at 1.9 million tons averaging 0.251 oz gold per ton.

As reported in our July 13 issue, the joint venture partners are currently installing a $5-million test- milling facility in preparation for a production decision.

“We haven’t nailed down an exact location for the road but we hope it will provide the best access for both companies,” said transportation economist Gary Todd.

The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines will also spend approximately $1 million to improve the Harker-Holloway road northeast of Kirkland Lake, Ont. The mine access road which runs north from Highway 66 east of Kirkland Lake to Hwy 101, will be widened in selected areas and crushed gravel applied to the north section.

A new structure will also be installed, replacing the existing Victoria Creek Bridge on the portion of the road south of Esker Lakes Provincial Park.

“The Harker-Holloway Road provides access for mineral exploration and development in the area and reduces distances and costs for support services and labor,” said Mr Ramsay.

Scheduled to be completed this fall, the improvements will attempt to eradicate poor visibility on the road.
