The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) will honor seven members of the mining community at the annual awards banquet on Monday, March 25. Selected to receive the Bill Dennis Prospector of the Year award is Ron Netolitzky, who was instrumental in acquiring, exploring and financing two major gold discoveries in northwestern British Columbia: the Snip deposit and the Eskay Creek deposit.
Developers awards will go to Robert Dickinson and Robert Hunter for their role in financing and exploring the Mount Milligan gold-copper porphyry deposit. Currently being developed by Placer Dome (TSE), Mount Milligan is estimated to contain reserves of 400 million tonnes grading 0.2% copper and 0.48 grams gold per tonne.
Vaino Ronka, who invented the revolutionary VLF electromagnetic survey instrument, will receive a Distinguished Service award. He is being recognized for his contribution to worldwide mineral exploration through his inventions of geophysical instruments.
A second Distinguished Service award will be presented to Donald Worth for his support for and work on behalf of the PDAC as director, committee member and convention organizer.
Michael Henrick will receive a Special Achievement award for his efforts to reclaim Queenstake Resources’ Moyie River placer mining operation southwest of Cranbrook, B.C. To date, half of the land disturbed by the mining operation has been reclaimed to a mix of wetlands, grasslands and forested areas.
A Special Achievement award will also be given to George Podolsky in recognition of the bravery that he showed in an airplane crash on Baffin Island in May, 1958. Despite dislocated ankles and the loss of his spectacles, Podolsky managed to keep his three fellow travellers — a fellow geologist and the plane’s pilot and copilot — alive for four days until their rescue.
Lise Bacon, Quebec’s Vice-Premier and Minister of Energy and Resources, will present the awards. N3 HExploration to be featured LThe March 25 edition of The Northern Miner will feature a special section on the latest exploration developments, to appear in conjunction with the annual convention held by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada in Toronto. An on-site report of exploration activity in Wisconsin, including Noranda’s Lynne discovery, will be highlighted. Other topics to be covered include juniors and financing, “hot spots” in British Columbia and work being carried out at a variety of exploration plays across the country.
