Needed: fewer ‘middlemen’

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

What an excellent editorial you published on the need for more tax cuts on stock gifts to charities (T.N.M., May 6-12/05).

Governments need to have it emphasized that they are counter-productive as “middlemen” between donors and charities. It should also be noted that new donors who are encouraged by better tax-treatment often become more involved and volunteer managerial expertise to their selected recipients.

We wish that more of the press would join in supporting this obviously good cause.

Editorial kudos

Your editorial “Getting a leg up on a legacy” (T.N.M., May 6-12/05) was an excellent piece of work!

I know Don Johnson and his crusade well. Any time money can be diverted from government’s management is a plus for society and Canada.

The failure of this government to extends stock donation tax exemptions won’t deter determined private-sector folks from making gifts — we certainly aren’t going to stop giving because of the failure to pass on more tax relief.
