Natives seek increased participation in mining

A new association based in Rama, Ont., is promoting the desire of aboriginals to work with mining companies in exploration, mine development and resource management.

The Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association (CAMA) intends to accomplish both economic growth and environmental protection at the community level. “Increasing aboriginal participation in the mining industry will be one of the many avenues to communities in advancing our goal of self-sufficiency as we progress into self-governing First Nations,” says Ovide Mercredi, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

George Miller, president of the Mining Association of Canada, thinks CAMA can be “a means to improve mutual cooperation and understanding” between natives and industry.
