Native teachers to attend BC workshop

The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines will expend $60,000 in an effort to encourage teachers from aboriginal communities to attend a workshop about mining and minerals.

Participants will attend a half-day workshop organized by the British Columbia Mining Association and receive a resource kit for use in the classroom. The kit will contain information on minerals, mining and geoscience.

“With this funding, the government will improve access to the program for teachers from aboriginal schools, many of whom are from remote communities,” said Energy and Mines Minister Glenn Robertson, addressing the opening session of Cordilleran Roundup 2001 in Vancouver.

Funding will cover the cost of transportation, accommodation and salaries of substitute teachers for as many as 25 participants. The contribution is part of a provincial program designed to assist First Nations in economic development and partnerships.

The industry’s Mining Aboriginal Relations Group (MARG) identified a need for aboriginal access to the program. MARG is also asking participating teachers to develop a supplement to the program, to be used in aboriginal communities.
