Ontario’s mine rescue team, entered for the first time ever in the national mine rescue competition, has tied with a Northwest Territories team from Nanisivik Mines for top spot in the event, held recently in Nanaimo, B.C.
Other teams represented B.C., Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Yukon.
The national competition tests six different specific skill areas. They include a multiple choice examination (theoretical), bench testing (equipment), first aid, fire fighting, obstacle/recovery and smoke chamber.
Members of the Ontario team, which drew praise from David Peterson, acting minister of northern development and mines, for its first-time showing, were Larry Livingston, Lac Minerals, Myron McCormick, Falconbridge Ltd., Gerry MacKenzie, Domtar Chemicals, Greg Hobson, Noranda Inc. and Gerry Labelle, Denison Mines.
The team was coached by senior mine rescue officer Ron Eveson, Sudbury, and mine rescue officers Charles Burton, Kirkland Lake, and Jack Wallgren, of Sudbury.
