The president of Minorco (USA), Gerald Munera, will present the mining industry’s perspective in a panel discussion May 2 on “the role of mining in a developed society” at the Toronto ’94 convention.
Minorco (USA) has interests in base and precious metals, industrial minerals, oil and gas, and fertilizers in Canada and the U.S. In a career that spans 30 years, Munera has also worked in Europe and Africa. He will be speaking at the plenary session of the 94th annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). Presenting the environment lobby’s view will be Elizabeth May, Canadian chairman for the Sierra Club. Leo Gerard, Canadian director of the United Steelworkers of America, will present labor’s view.
The chairman of Inco, Michael Sopko, will close the session with a discussion of technical innovations in mining.
Co-chairing the plenary session will be Alex Balogh, president of Noranda Minerals and honorary chairman of Toronto 94, and Philip Martin of Gordon Capital.
Toronto ’94 is the umbrella organization for three trade shows and four conferences taking place May 1-4 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Other activities planned include the annual Mineral Outlook Conference (scheduled for May 4) sponsored by the CIM’s Mineral Economics Society, the Mining Association of Canada and Natural Resources Canada; Health & Safety ’94, a trade and conference show; and
AGGPAC, an international aggregates conference.
