A mudslide in early November at the Antamina copper-zinc mine in Peru has claimed the life of one employee of Compania Minera Antamina.
The 240,000-cubic-metre slide also covered several pieces of heavy-equipment including a shovel, haulage truck and two drills. A salvage operation is under way.
The mudflow largely consisted of sediments originally forming at the bottom of a small lake, which had been drained during preproduction. The incident occurred as waste material was being removed from the lake bottom.
Production resumed within 24 hours of the incident, and the company says the accident will not affect concentrate production.
Situated in the district of San Marcos, Antamina is owned 33.75% by BHP Billiton, 33.75% by Noranda, 22.5% by Teck Cominco and 10% by Mitsubishi.
