A team representing Cambior’s Mouska mine in northwestern Quebec won the provincial mine rescue competition held recently in Val d’Or.
Four teams that had won preliminary competitions last fall competed against each other. The three other teams were from the Sleeping Giant gold mine (owned equally by Cambior and Aurizon), the Niobec niobium mine (owned equally by Mazarin and Cambior) and the Louvicourt copper-zinc-silver-gold mine (owned by Novicourt, with 45%, Aur Resources, with 30%, and Teck Cominco, with 25%). All four mines are in northwestern Quebec.
The competition measures theoretical knowledge as well as competency in underground rescue operations.
The Mouska team, which also won a trophy for best performance in first-aid, included Daniel Dziel, ric Devin, Marc Blisle, Jacques Morin, Ghislain Lafond, Serge Landry, Donald Dziel, Serge Riendeau, Marc Ct, and Annie Routhier.
The Mouska mine is part of Cambior’s Doyon division and is in the prolific Cadillac fault. Since it began production in 1991, Mouska has produced more than 600,000 oz. gold. The mine employs 130 people.
The team representing the Sleeping Giant mine earned the highest marks in the theoretical examinations.
