Most Russians survive ordeal

Eleven of the 13 men trapped in a flooded mine in southern Russian have survived the 6-day ordeal. Of the two remaining miners: one has died, and the other is missing.

As many as 800 rescuers dug through 50 metres of rock in an adjacent mine to reach the survivors.

The miners were working in a shaft when a makeshift dam that had been stemming the flow of water into the mine suddenly gave way. The flood cut power to the lift, which was the only means of escape.

In a separate incident, five miners died when a methane explosion ripped through a mine 750 metres below the surface in eastern Siberia.
