Montreal-based Canadian Liquid Air says it will build an on-site Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) plant to supply oxygen to Placer Dome’s (TSE) new autoclave at the Campbell gold mill near Balmertown, Ont. The plant, Canadian Air’s first VSA in Canada, will supply 35 tonnes per day of oxygen at a purity level of 92% for high-pressure leaching of refractory ore. The major components of the oxygen plant will be built in Montreal and later assembled in Balmertown for startup in July, 1991. The project represents an investment in excess of $3 million.
Placer Dome is spending nearly $24 million to modernize its Campbell Red Lake operation to pretreat refractory gold concentrates by pressure oxidation.
“Canadian Liquid Air is proud to be associated with the first gold mine in Canada adopting this type of pressure oxidation process for the treatment of refractory ores,” the company said.
The process allows the release of gold from sulphides (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and pyrite) by combining them with oxygen under temperature and pressure in an autoclave. The process eliminates sulphur dioxide emissions and produces environmentally safe compounds.
