The Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa has released two new hologram coins, including a one-quarter-ounce gold maple leaf coin and a gold maple leaf 5-coin set.
The hologram on the quarter-ounce single coin depicts three maple leaves on a branch. The leaves are coloured red, green, blue and yellow. Mintage of the single coin is limited to 15,000 and will retail for $195.95.
(A hologram is a three-dimensional photograph obtained by exposing a photographic plate near an object illuminated by a laser beam.)
The 5-coin set represents only the second time such a product has been issued by the Mint. It comes in a mahogany box with a brass plaque featuring the Mint logo, and sells for $1,995.95.
The Mint was the first to produce 99.99% gold coins, in 1982, and diversified its bullion line with the creation of a guaranteed-value gold bullion coin in 1997, as well as a gold bullion wafer and a 99.99% pure gold coin.
