Mining town fails to sell in online auction

A 150-acre former mining town on Route 66 in southern California’s Mojave Desert failed to sell after a month-long auction on e-Bay, the online marketplace.

Bidding on the town, known as Amboy, ended in early April after a month on the Internet site yielded no offers at the minimum reserve price. The town has a listed value of US$1.9-million, but the top bid was only US$995,900.

Amboy has seven residents, a post office, motel, cafe, gas station, church, gift shop and two landing strips. The buyer would also get about 540 acres of surrounding land divided in five parcels. The town is owned by celebrity photographer Timothy White and his business partner.

The owners are now expected to try selling the town through a real estate broker.

Amboy was founded in 1858 as a mining town. It is a 3.5-hour drive from Los Angeles, about halfway between Barstow and Needles.
