Mining policy set for May 20

The federal minister of state for forestry and mines gave few clues to his new mining policy in a speech to a luncheon gathering at the 89th annual meeting of the cim in Toronto.

Gerald Merrithew is scheduled to deliver his mineral policy May 20 in Ottawa at the Canadian Mineral Outlook Conference.

In his cim address, the minister spoke of consultation and co-operation. “We will not only fully respect the rights and responsibilities of the provinces, but we hope to co-ordinate our work more closely with their needs and the needs of industry,” he said.

“We will be working to ensure that all federal government activity is consistent with the direction we are setting out, regardless of the federal department or agency.”
