Mining organizations intervene as CBD sues BLM

Several mining organizations have banded together to fight a lawsuit that threatens to hinder future development in the California Desert Conservation Area, where mining already takes place.

The Centre for Biological Diversity (CBD), which has taken credit for stopping logging in the Pacific Northwest, filed suit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for alleged violations of the Endangered Species Act. The suit challenges BLM’s “approval or carrying out of” certain activities, including mining, grazing, road-building, water diversions and energy production, among others.

The California Mining Association and the Mojave Desert Mining Council have agreed to intervene in the lawsuit. Mining companies active in the region are expected to support this initiative. Their mines operate under the strictest environmental standards anywhere in North America.
