MINING IN MEXICO — Saskatchewan and Durango sign economic

After almost two years of discussion, the province of Saskatchewan and the Mexican state of Durango have signed a formal partnership agreement for economic co-operation.

Under the agreement, signed in Durango City, Saskatchewan and Durango agreed to establish links between their private sectors and to promote strategic alliances or joint ventures.

“We have identified mutually beneficial economic development opportunities in the fields of agriculture and livestock husbandry, mining, food science, and water and environmental management,” Saskatchewan’s Economic De velopment Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said.

Lingenfelter said that the growth of Saskatchewan’s annual exports to Mexico to $118 million in 1993 from $18 million in 1991 indicates the potential of the Mexican market.

The agreement also provides for the exchange of information regarding technologies, economic opportunities and market conditions.

Both sides have also expressed interest in evaluating the opportunities for further co-operation in the areas of ecology, agro-industries, forestry, socio-economics, education and training.
