Development of the Mariquita copper deposit in northwestern Mexico would see an open-pit, heap-leach, solvent extraction-electrowinning operation, producing about 15,000 tonnes per year of high-purity copper cathode, Cominco Resources International (TSE) says.
Mariquita is located near Cananea in Sonora state, 5 km from the Maria copper mine and mill which is owned and operated by Minera Maria, and is close to power, transportation and other facilities. Minera Maria is a Mexican company owned 49% by Cominco Resources and 51% by Empresas Frisco. The deposit contains 43 million tonnes grading 0.46% copper, composed of 33 million tonnes of “indicated” ore grading 0.47% and 10 million tonnes of “other resources” grading 0.43%.
Most of the “other” resources are located in the northern part of the deposit where the distance between drill holes is somewhat greater, the company says. The stripping ratio would be less than two tonnes of waste per tonne of ore. Metallurgical tests on ore samples have indicated that an 85% copper recovery would be achievable, the company says.
The project has been undergoing feasibility and engineering work.
