MINING IN AFRICA SPECIAL — Namco starts sampling program

A wholly owned subsidiary of VSE-listed Namibian Minerals Corp. (Namco) has met charter terms for a vessel which will be deployed in a diamond bulk-sampling program within Namibian and South African waters.

The 2,200-tonne vessel, M.V. Sprut, has full dynamic position capability and 4-point mooring. It also has a 100-tonne A frame, and a 50-tonne crane. The 180-day bulk-sampling program will begin over Namco’s marine diamond concessions, off the coast of southwestern Africa.

The program will make use of specifically designed sampling equipment developed by Royal Boskalis in conjunction with Namco.

Based on trials in the North Sea, the technology is expected to clear 10-sq.-metre sample points down to bedrock.

Namco says the ability to undertake primary screening on the ocean floor, coupled with an articulated means of moving oversize material, is a unique combination.
