Idaho-based Coeur d’Alene Mines recently picked up an environmental award for its Golden Cross mine, a 100,000-oz.-per-year gold operation in New Zealand.
This brings to 10 the total number of national andinternational environmental awards the company has won since 1986.
In granting the award for the Cross mine, the Environment Waikato Regional Council noted the Golden Cross initiatives which exceeded environmental compliance requirements.
The enhancement program at the mine included collecting seeds of native tree species and increasing their growth through replanting on Golden Cross land to provide native wildlife habitat. The mine projects also include three water treatment systems, biological monitoring systems, a “fish friendly” fish passage, a pest control program and a public access track.
The judges noted that while the companies were required to undertake environmental initiatives as part of the permitting process, (Golden Cross) “had far exceeded the requirements in the projects they had put in place.” Coeur d’Alene Mines has an 80% interest in Golden Cross, with Todd Corp. of New Zealand holding the remainder.
