Mines Minister Anne Edwards presented safety awards to 10 British Columbia mines during the province’s Mining Week.
The Occupational Health and Safety Committee trophy for the best overall health and safety program went to Fording Coal’s Greenhills coal operation. The mine also won the Edward Prior award for having the lowest frequency of injuries at an open-pit mine operating at between 200,000 and 1 million man-hours per year.
For the sixth consecutive year, Highland Valley Copper won the John Ash award for having the best safety record for an open-pit mine operating at more than 1 million man-hours per year.
Highland Valley experienced only 18 lost-time accidents during more than 2 million man-hours in 1994.
The Stewart/O’Brien award for the lowest rate of injury frequency when man-hours are between 35,000 and 200,000 was shared by four operations. Each of the four — Steelhead Aggregates’ Chilliwack and Abbotsford divisions, and Westroc Industries’ Elkhorn Quarry and Baymag mines — reported zero injuries.
The Small Underground Mine award was presented to Westmin Resources’ Premier mine near Stewart.
