Roughly 100 miners at the Newmont gold mine in Nevada travelled 1,000 km to Denver, Colo., in mid-September to protest being without a contract for more than a year.
The miners picketed outside the Westin Hotel, where the annual Denver Gold Forum convention was being held. They said the 4-day strike was held because Newmont had not been bargaining in good faith.
The most contentious issue is pension benefits. Others include the company’s attempt to redefine the workweek, overtime rules, seniority policies, and the hiring of contractors.
