Miners meet in Calgary to transfer technology

A total of 260 mining people, from 19 countries, participated in an international symposium on mine planning and equipment selection at the University of Calgary recently.

The symposium was organized by the Faculty of Continuing Education, The University of Calgary, the Coal Research Laboratories of CANMET and the International Journal of Surface Mining. Sixty papers were presented on topic s such as economic evaluation, computer applications, surface and underground mining equipment, truck dispatch systems and innovative research and development (R & D) aimed at improving productivity in surface and underground mines.

The pre-symposium seminars on computerized mine planning and mine design using rock mass classifications were attended by some 98 registrants. These seminars were co-sponsored by CANMET, the University of Calgary, the International Journal of Surface Mining and The Northern Miner Magazine.

The symposium chairman, Dr. Raj Singhal, told The Northern Miner this is the third symposium he has organized with The University of Calgary. Although the university does not have a mining department, the faculties of Continuing Education and Engineering support the symposiums.

The symposiums provide information to mine operators, enabling them to learn and pursue technology most appropriate for their particular mines, Singhal says.
