MINER BRIEFS — Aluminum smelter

Joint venture partners SNC-Lavalin of Montreal and Johannesburg-based Engineering Management Services say they will join with Alusaf Ltd. to construct the world’s largest aluminum smelter ever built at one time, at Richards Bay, South Africa. Estimated capital cost is $3 billion. Production capacity will be 466,000 tonnes per year. Initial production is scheduled for November, 1995; full capacity should be reached one year later.
