For the fifth consecutive year, Highland Valley Copper has won the John Ash Safety Award for having the best safety record for open-pit mines operating at more than a million man-hours per year.
The large operation near Kamloops, B.C., was one of 12 mines in the province recognized for having achieved high standards of safety. The awards were presented by British Columbia Mines Minister Anne Edwards during the province’s Mining Week.
The Occupational Health and Safety Committee Trophy went to the Quintette Coal mine and the award for best small underground mine went to Golden Bear, which is owned by North American Metals. The Baymag mine was also awarded for its safety record.
