Mine rescue awards reflect safety record of mining in B.C.

A mine rescue team from Cominco’s Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B.C., won top spot in the underground mining category in a recent province-wide mine rescue competition.

A total of nine B.C. mines took part, following regional zone competitions held in May for both underground and open pit mines.

In the latest contest, a rescue team from Equity Silver Mines won in the open pit competition.

In the 3-man first aid competition, Utah Mines’ Island Copper was judged the winner of the five teams entered, while Blackdome Mines, south of Williams Lake, came first in tests of rescue theory and equipment. The mining industry is described by B.C. Mines Minister Jack Davis as the safest heavy industry in the province, with wage loss claims less than half the rate for other heavy industries.

Davis said the accident rate in mining per 100,000 man hours has fallen from 3.8 accidents in 1980 to 1.6 in 1987.

The provincial mine rescue championships are organized and judged by mines inspectors of B.C.’s ministry of energy, mines and petroleum resources.
