Mine design conference set for Kingston in August

Speakers at the mine design conference Aug. 23-26 in Kingston, Ont., will represent mining interests from all over the world. The conference is part of Queen’s University’s centennial celebration.

They include James Ashcroft, Inco Ltd.’s president of the Ontario Division; Thomas Atkinson of England-based Atkinson Mining Services; Ivan Valenzuela, Chile’s deputy minister of mining; Horst Wagner, senior general manager of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa; and Kevin Rosengren of Kevin Rosengren & Associates in Queensland, Australia.

They will address such topics as open pit and underground planning and design, slope stability and rock mechanics, underground support and backfill, mine environment and ventilation, and explosive technology and blast monitoring.
