Meteorite has unique composition

A meteorite discovered almost 10 years ago on a beach near the town of Penouille in Quebec’s Gaspe region was recently recovered by a committee of the Canadian Space Agency.

The space rock was found by Christian Couture of Repentigny, who came forward with his discovery after the publicity surrounding the recent meteorite find in St-Robert, Que. (Fragments of a meteorite were found scattered in the community.) The Gaspe meteorite is the fourth discovered in Quebec and the 49th found in Canada.

Preliminary examinations indicate a composition distinct from all other known iron meteorites. It weighed 73 grams when found and is thought to be several billion years old.

The space rock was recovered by the Agency’s meteorites and impacts advisory committee, a volunteer group of geologists and astronomers.
