World crude steel output rose to a record high of 783.5 million tonnes in 1989, up 0.5% from the previous year, according to preliminary figures released by the International Iron and Steel Institute. Estimated production in the non-communist world last year amounted to 495.9 million tonnes, up 1.4% from 1988.
