The Australian Nugget gold bullion coin achieved worldwide sales of 246,038 oz comprising 570,416 coins less than three months after it went on sale this year. The sales were almost double the original target. Australia is now planning to produce platinum and silver coins in addition to the gold coins.
The mining industry pays higher wages than any other sector of the Canadian economy, according to the Mining Association of Canada. In 1986 the average weekly mining salary was $667.52, compared with $566.46 for second-place forestry. Within the mining sector, coal miners earned the highest weekly wages, $745.24 in 1986 compared with $690.98 in metal mines.
