McLellan launches cross-country lab

Anne McLellan, Canada’s minister of natural resources, helped launch the Mobile Foundry Laboratory during a recent ceremony at Quality Steel Foundries in Edmonton, Alta.

The mobile laboratory will review the technical procedures of 20 foundries each year, for the next three years, and demonstrate new ways to improve product quality while increasing energy efficiency through materials conservation.

This cross-country initiative is managed by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), a division of Natural Resources Canada.

The Canadian foundry industry employs 15,000 people and contributes an estimated $2 billion to the gross domestic product.

McLellan says the mobile laboratory program will help the foundry industry compete in a global marketplace through cost-effective technologies and environmentally sound practices that consistently produce quality goods.
