A 4,500-sq.-ft. school is being constructed in Henderson, Nev., so that students can learn about the state’s rich mining history.
When it opens in September, the school will feature a mine tunnel, a display of the geology and history of Nevada, exhibits of contemporary mining practices, and information on careers, environmental considerations, and reclamation.
According to The Nevada Miner, the newsletter of the Nevada Mining Association, the McCaw School of Mines was launched by local teachers who wanted to provide “hands-on” experience to stimulate students to become interested in mining.
Sponsors include the Nevada Mining Association, Barrick Gold, Independence Mining, Newmont Gold, Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Rayrock, Coeur Rochester and others.
The project is still in need of additional financial support and supplies from the mining community. High on the list is the need for guest speakers, mining memorabilia, samples and interactive displays.
Information is available by calling the Nevada Mining Association at (702) 829-2121.
