Joint-venture partners PhosCan Chemical (FOS-V, PCCLF-O) and Baltic Resources (BLR-V, BALRF-O) have published a new resource estimate for the Martison phosphate deposit in north-central Ontario, the first estimate on the deposit to comply with present-day securities regulations.
Consultant James Spalding estimated a measured and indicated resource of 62 million tonnes grading 23.55% P2O5 (phosphoric oxide) and 0.34% Nb2O5 (niobium oxide). Another 56 million tonnes, at 21.87% P2O5 and 0.34% Nb2O5, is inferred.
A late-1990s estimate on the deposit, not compliant with National Instrument 43-101, gave an inferred resource of a similar size, 113 million tonnes grading 21% P2O5.
The partners are advancing a prefeasibility study on production of phosphoric acid with byproduct niobium and gypsum from the project, which is 70 km northeast of Hearst, Ont. Process tests are under way at Jacobs Engineering and a pit design is in progress. Mining contractors have provided quotes for contract-mining a pit and consulting firm Golder Associates is doing a baseline environmental study.
