Out of every dollar raised for exploration in Canada, 70 cents goes outside the country, and the Manitoba government wants to lure some of those funds to projects within its jurisdiction. This objective will form the thrust of the province’s Mining and Minerals Convention, scheduled for Nov. 19 to 21.
The event will enable Manitoba Mines and Energy to highlight increased incentives for exploration, including a new Mineral Exploration Assistance Program that provides up to 25% of exploration funds to qualifying projects. Those projects that lie within a designated area of the Superior Province will qualify to receive up to 35% of available funds.
Technical presentations will be made from the ministry, as well as from its counterpart in Saskatchewan, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the University of Manitoba. These will cover geological and mineral-resource studies throughout Manitoba, including the NATMAP Shield Margin Project, a co-operative venture between the provincial surveys and the GSC.
Business sessions will focus on the province’s New Minerals Strategy, with emphasis on taxation, exploration assistance, permitting and land tenure. Manitoba’s new mines — New Britannia, Photo Lake and Keystone — will be discussed by the presidents of TVX, Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting and Granduc.
The convention is being held at the International Inn in Winnipeg. For more information, call (800) 223-5215.
