Manitoba convention to explore regional geology, competitiveness

The Manitoba mining and minerals convention will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre from Nov. 18 to 20.

This year’s convention, titled “Investing Together for the Future,” will feature business and technical programs, as well as a trade and property show.

Technical sessions include a discussion of the evaluation of alteration zones at Snow Lake, a collaboration among industry, universities and government; the study of the Superior boundary zone, an area know for its metal mines; and the geology of the northern Lake Superior region.

Business sessions will focus on: efforts by companies, unions and government to remain competitive in a tight market; an evaluation of the volatility and uncertainty of current commodity markets; and the future relationships of industry, government and special interest groups in the mining industry.

Sponsored by the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association, as well as Placer Dome, Voisey’s Bay Nickel, Rio Algom and Rio Tinto, the conference will explore the evolving relationship between aboriginals and resource companies as partners in mineral development.

Discussions will feature updates on the status of outstanding land claims and projects affected by them, and workshops are expected to focus on community development, employment and training.
