A 1968 graduate in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto, Ewaschuk immediately joined the Rio Algom organization as a mill engineer at its Nordic project. He helped with the Quirke concentrator start-up, and later was transferred to the head office of Rio’s parent company RTZ in London, England, where he worked on various feasibility studies for two years. Then he had a one-year stint with RTZ Consultants “over there.”
Ewaschuk returned to Elliot Lake in 1973 as metallurgical engineer at the Quirke mill. Five years later, he became superintendent of the Panel mill where he was involved in its design. In 1980 he was transferred to Rio’s Stanleigh project where he worked closely with Bechtel Engineering on the design of that mill, and was responsible for its start-up. He hired personnel and organized a mill operator training program.
He was promoted to manager of the Stanleigh mill in early 1986 and transferr ed back to Quirke two years later as the mine’s manager, the post he currently holds.
