Man dies in coal mine

A contractor working at Anglo Coal’s Dartbrook mine, near Muswellbrook, New South Wales, was killed when the shaft in which he was working collapsed.

The company says the man died after being pinned under a rockfall but did not say what caused the accident; nor did it release the victim’s name.

The man’s heart had stopped by the time a helicopter ambulance arrived.

An inspector from the state’s Department of Mineral Resources examined the site and prepared a preliminary investigation for the coroner.

It was the second mining-related death in Australia within a week.
