The testing is the second phase of an $11-million project initiated by Magnola, a joint venture of Noranda Minerals and Lavalin Inc. of Montreal. The first phase involved work on a pre-feasibility study to determine the suitable technology to allow for production of magnesium at a competitive price.
Government funding will account for almost half of total expenditures to the end of the second phase. Lavalintech has the option of either selling the new technology or investing in a plant capable of processing 50,000 tonnes of material per year.
