MAC to adopt product stewardship approach

The 100 members of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) will be taking on added responsibilities for protecting the natural environment under its new Chairman Keith Hendrick. He is also president of Noranda Minerals. Speaking to 13 members of the press from across Canada via conference telephone and in person in the company’s boardroom in Toronto, Hendrick said, “in the months and years ahead, we will be pursuing a product stewardship approach in the mining industry.”

Product stewardship makes management responsible for the end use of its company’s products.

Under such an approach, mining companies would retain the responsibility for the safe use and recycling or disposal of metals after the raw mineral products are sold to other companies.

While the MAC will be preparing guidelines on product stewardship for its members to follow, Hendrick admits the association cannot enforce the adoption of the guidelines by all members.
