The industry must embrace sustainable mining to convince a skeptical public about its role in combatting global warming, Ross Beaty, Rob McEwen and former Conservative Party leader Erin O’Toole say in a new video.

Mining luminaries Beaty and McEwen stressed the importance of tapping renewable energy, eliminating tailings dams and slashing water use. They spoke on a green metals panel at The Northern Miner’s International Metals Symposium in London Dec. 1-2.

“At the end of the day, it affects your bottom line,” said Beaty, chair of the $3.8-billion market cap Equinox Gold (TSX: EQX: NYSE-AM: EQX).

The panel, also including O’Toole’s comments on trade wars and Nicole Schwab of the World Economic Forum on mining’s environmental impact, was chronicled in this Dec. 6 article on The Northern Miner.
