Line Creek coal mine will expand

The Line Creek coal mine has received approval from the British Columbia government to expand to Horseshoe Ridge. The mine is about 18 km northeast of Sparwood.

Line Creek Resources has been producing coal from the Line Creek Ridge area since 1982, and has received numerous awards for its reclamation efforts. Mines Minister Anne Edwards says the company’s expansion to Horseshoe Ridge will strengthen the economy of southeastern British Columbia, “while adhering to high environmental and reclamation standards.”

The mine development certificate approves the 684-hectare development, which will add 35 million raw tonnes of coal to the Line Creek operation over the next 15 years. Pits will be developed to the north, south and central portions of the ridge.
