On Dec. 3, the Resident Geologist’s office in Wawa became a historical artifact of the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
In spite of the valuable contribution it was making to exploration in northern Ontario, the office was made a victim of short-sighted management, intent on meeting political cost-cutting quotas without consulting the public for alternative solutions.
Letters and petitions of protest after the closure was announced in May were met with the arrogance of power.
The lesson? We urge those who still enjoy local access to Resident Geologist services to maintain a campaign of awareness among politicians, bureaucrats and the public. Perhaps then, “management fat” and not “public service heart” will be removed in the next “fiscal restraint exercise.”
